It is important we understand who Jesus is, and how this relates to our decision to follow Him. The actions of Jesus throughout the Gospels show His identity of being both human and divine. Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. (Colossians 1:15)

The human nature of Jesus is God clothed in human flesh, limited in time and space. From the beginning of Adam and Eve, when sin first entered the world, God promised He would send a Son, the Saviour who would crush the head of the enemy, Satan. Jesus came to save us from our sin, to give us hope and a new life (Matthew 1:21).

The divine nature of Jesus gives us strength and confidence in how we relate to God. He is all powerful, all-knowing, and everywhere at the same time. All authority belongs to Jesus both in heaven and in earth. After Jesus ascended in to heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit to empower us to overcome sin. The presence of Jesus is all around us. All we have to do is call His name, turn to Him, acknowledge He is there, and He will answer.

"Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."

Acts 4:12 NKJV

There is power in the name of Jesus. He is the name above all names, and His miracle-working power continues to blow our minds. Yet, He is also human, the personal friend who knows what we are going through and cares about us. The Bible also calls Him "Emmanuel" God with us.

About you and me, how do we know?

Often we disqualify ourselves from God’s love because of our history, faults and failures. The first step is to realize we can never make up for our sin by self-improvement or good works.

How can we accept what we have not earned? The Bible says that nothing can separate us from the Love of God (Romans 8:31-39). How we choose to receive God’s love is to trust His patient, forgiving and unmerited favour towards us (Ephesians 1:6). Turning our face towards Jesus, He gives us the power to free us from guilt, shame and condemnation, to give us a life of wholeness.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16 ESV

Where Do I Start?

The definition of being a Christian is to be a follower of Jesus. Jesus loves you and wants to be in relationship with you. So to answer the question "how do I become a Christian" let's look in the Bible...

If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 

Romans 10:9

It's that simple.

Your first step is to say; "Jesus, I believe you are Lord and Saviour of my life." Believe it in your heart that He died and resurrected from the dead, your sins are forgiven and your relationship with God has begun. When you trust Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, you enter into the fullness of God's love. As you start to understand God's love, you become a new person. Picture it as an adoption into a new family, one where you are loved so unconditionally you grow and become the best person you can be, not because you have to, but because you want to. God's family is huge, without walls and borders, it's limitless. Through His death on the cross, and then coming back from the dead, Jesus took all of your wrong and gave you all of His right. You have just begun the greatest journey of your life!

Prayer is talking to God as you would a close friend. He really hears you, the Holy Spirit will comfort, lead you and guide you. The Bible is God's word and is one of the primary ways He speaks to us. When we pray and read our Bible, the Word becomes alive in us. John chapter 1 reveals to us that Jesus is the Word.
